Popcorn Show & Sell at the Pecan Festival 24-26 October 2008
The pack rented a booth at the Pecan Festival and undertook a popcorn show & sell later in the year than normal. Hurricane Ike caused the cancellation of show & sell throughout most of Three Rivers Council, including the 2 planned by Pack 287 at local grocery stores. Then when the popcorn did not arrive in time for First Friday because the delivery company lost the shipment, Pack 287 determined to overcome these hurdles and sell some popcorn anyway. Eleven boys participated in the effort, selling popcorn while sprinkling in time to ride the carnival rides, play carnival games, and eat festival food. Working Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon, the boys sold over six cases of popcorn, which went to help support the pack and Three Rivers Council. The Pecan Festival is usually held in September in Groves, but it too was delayed by Hurricane Ike. Initially the organizers thought that it would be cancelled, but changed course after the Rice Festival in Winnie was cancelled (due to damage to the grounds) and the Southeast Texas State Fair was rescheduled to the spring. |
