Sea Rim Beach Clean Up

26 April 2008

Twenty-seven cub scouts and family members spent their day helping to clean up Sea Rim State Park in Sabine Pass. Park Rangers Joseph Munguia and Gene Cox were targeting to reopen the park on Memorial Day weekend. The cub scouts did their best to help the park get ready for visitors.

The boys got to have fun picking up a bunch of shells and seeing one of the alligators, all while doing a good deed for the park. The cub scouts and parents helped by picking up trash from in front of the Beach Unit, repairing and digging out picnic tables half buried with sand, pulling reeds growing through the Gambusia Trail boardwalk, preparing the soil under the Beach Unit for landscaping, and mowing the main paths to the beach.

Sea Rim has been closed since Hurricane Rita. Park rangers brought in front-end loaders to dig the facilities out from under the sand blown by the storm, but the park cannot reopen until a new wastewater treatment plant is built. “Funding for a new plant was delayed at first because there was wrangling over whether or not FEMA would pay for the damage to the park,” said Munguia, “but eventually the funding issues were resolved.”
