Memories

I always told the Boy Scouts "No Running" when we went camping. One evening some of the boys came running through camp and I told them to stop running, so they said "Yes, sir." But as soon as they were out of sight, off they went again. I knew what they were doing, so I set out after them. I didn't use a flashlight, because I didn't want them to know I was coming. I just stood in a dark place til I could see just as well as daylight. I walked after them and spotted something on the trail when I got close to them. "Boys, come here," I called. "Yes, sir." "Do you see that right there?" "That stick sir." "Look closely," I said, "It's a snake. Who was the last boy along this trail?" One of the boys admitted he was. "Do you want to see how close you came to being bitten by a 3-foot copperhead? See the toe of this step barely missed it, and the heel of the next step." "Well anyhow, it's a dead snake, sir." So I told them to stand back, got a branch, and touched the snake. It struck the branch, then slithered off the trail. "Why didn't you kill it?" the boys wanted to know. "Because we're visiting in his home. If I killed it, that would be like the snake coming into your home and killing you." "What is the lesson here?" I asked the boys. "Look where you are going," they answered. "Don't run!" I added. After that night, I didn't have any more trouble with those boys running.
